Food Bank For NY needed help getting more meals to those in need. By using the Toyota Production System, they were able to do just that.

The Challenge

In 2012, Superstorm Sandy ravaged the East Coast, leaving many New Yorkers with limited access to food for their families. Food Bank For NY sprung into action but suddenly found themselves over-supplied and under-staffed.

Long after the storm had subsided, volunteers were still unable to provide food quickly and efficiently, leaving them not only frustrated, but disappointed that they couldn’t do more.

The Toyota Effect

Using the Toyota Production System, team members worked with Food Bank For New York City to optimize operations in one of the hardest hit areas, and find a distribution system that worked best for everyone.

By modifying the location of supplies and reducing the size of the storage boxes to eliminate waste, more food could be packed and shipped for quickly. More importantly, the Food Bank was able to feed 400 more families in half the time.

Outside Toyota, ‘problem’ can sometimes have a negative connotation – a bad thing. I find that in many cases, it’s better to say ‘we have something that we can improve.
